If there were an award for putting Oscar-winners at ease, Patrick Hoelck would need another mantle. The gifted director and photographer counts Viola Davis, Clint Eastwood, Helen Mirren, and James Caan among his many notable subjects. He seems to effortlessly coax the essential to the surface. Emily Blunt, James McAvoy, Samuel L Jackson, Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo, Anna Paquin, and Katie Holmes have also stepped in front of his lens.
Patrick's warming presence is evident across the many platforms through which he plies his art, including his THE LOVE SHOW podcast and on-camera appearances in films. His work resonates because it does not hide, pervert, destroy, or malign. Instead, it emboldens an individual, celebrating them for who they are. Sexuality and celebrity status are consequential of being human—of being a man or woman, actor or actress, singer or musician, model or cult personality. Glamour and attitude are consequential of one's pride and self-respect. Patrick captures these symptoms at face value.
He was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1968, and in his early teens made his way to New York City. Patrick was quickly absorbed into the lawless city streets of the 1980's and at sixteen began directing music videos during the emergence of rap music. In 2002, he self-published his first book of photographs and short stories, entitled TAR, which was the catalyst for his emergence as a professional photographer. After friend Vincent Gallo chose him to shoot the cover of Flux magazine over the late Richard Avedon, he gained momentum and has since shot for major editorial, fashion and advertising clients. Patrick made his feature film directorial debut with 2010’s MERCY, winning Best Director and Best Film at the Savannah Film festival.
At VANDAL, Patrick continues to explore the intricacies of human nature through the lens, having recently directed a series of spots for L’Oreal featuring Hellen Mirren, Viola Davis and Amber Heard. He also shot the photos for them on set which are being used in the brand’s latest Age Perfect Campaign, for which Davis is a spokesperson.
